Wilbur August Weitzel, age 96, of Sac City, IA, entered into his Heavenly home on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.
Wilbur was born on June 30, 1920, to parents August and Ella (Herrig) Weitzel on a Lake View farm located in Clinton Township.
On June 14, 1942, Wilbur entered the United States Army. He traveled through England, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and central Europe while fighting in World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Army on October 15, 1945. Wilbur achieved the rank of AAF Aircrew Member with many special honors including European-African Badge MM with Carbine, Eastern Theater Ribbon with four bronze battle stars and Good Conduct Medal.
Wilbur married Betty Lou Schafer on November 23, 1947, at the First Presbyterian Church in Arcadia, IA. They made their home in Sac City and became the parents of five children: John, Suzanne, Beth Ann, Jeffrey, and Stacy.
Wilbur was a hard worker and provided for his family as a heavy equipment operator for Sac County for many years. He retired from the Sac County landfill in 1985. After retirement, Wilbur enjoyed doing crafts and sewing. Wilbur always enjoying having cats as pets.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: John (Jann) Weitzel, Nevada, MO, Jeffrey Weitzel, Sioux City, IA, Suzanne Petersen, Sioux City, IA, and Stacy (Mike) Weitzel, Mountain Lake Park, MD; sister Marcella Smith, Chetek, WI; five grandchildren: Sarah Moran, Lauren White, Aaron Petersen, Melissa Weitzel, and Jamie Weitzel; 7 great-grandchildren: Maya Moran, Jack Moran, Ellie Petersen, Noah Petersen, Mickael Weitzel, Madalyn Girard, and Kyler Vakulskas.
Wilbur was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, parents August and Ella Weitzel, sisters Mildred Bogi and Marjorie Ostercamp, infant daughter Beth Ann Weitzel, many aunts, uncles, and extended family and friends.
