Lorraine Pauline Schluter, age 75, of Wall Lake, IA, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake. Lorraine was born January 2, 1939, to Emil and Violetta (Witt) Schluter in St. Anthony’s Hospital, Carroll, IA. They lived on a farm in Jackson Township in Crawford County, six miles southwest of Wall Lake. Lorraine was baptized on January 2, 1939, in St. Anthony’s Hospital by Rev. Theo Tews. She was confirmed on March 29, 1953, in Wall Lake by Rev. O. E. Weiss. Lorraine attended grade school in a one-room country school at Jackson #1, later attending Wall Lake High School, graduating with the Class of 1957. After graduation she helped her parents on the farm until January, 1964, when they moved to Wall Lake. Lorraine was employed as a bookkeeper and teller at Wall Lake Savings Bank, later Bank Midwest, for over 40 years, retiring in 2004, assisting many customers above and beyond.

Lorraine was a current member of the Community Club and volunteered to work at fundraisers, soup suppers, and supported the local merchants whenever. She was always willing to purchase raffle tickets for out of town fundraisers and events. She worked with the Community Chest, canvassing houses for contributions, and monitoring the Goodwill trailer. For many years she faithfully took care of the Farm Festival cash stand and ride tickets, and worked diligently to sell tickets to area residents. She bowled for over 35 years, was secretary of the Hit and Miss Bowling League for many years, and attended various tournaments. She also participated in the Iowa Games. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, where she was the past Treasurer, served on the altar guild, and was a greeter. She also served with the ladies group at funeral lunches and various dinners. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, attending auctions, Great Iowa Treasurer Hunt, WLVA sporting events, and Louisville Cardinals’ Softball. When her health allowed, she loved to travel and enjoyed numerous bank bus trips and bowling tournaments. She also enjoyed spending time in Arizona during the winter months visiting her sisters.

Lorraine was a farmer at heart where she lived the first 25 years of her life, helping her parents with the farming operations and doing chores. After she moved to town, when the day’s work at the bank was finished, she would spend time at the farm, helping Jack and former neighbors with combining, baling, weeds, etc.

Many local residents have referred to her as the town historian. She could remember who lived where years ago, from whom they purchased the property, the size of their families, and so forth. In 1995 she was voted queen at the 50th Farm Festival and in 2000 she was the grand marshal of the 55th annual Farm Festival big parade. She also loved family history and felt it was important for extended family members to keep in touch. Lorraine was a special person. She was loved by many and liked by everyone.
