Patricia Mae Wiegel, age 91 of Lake View, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.
Pat Wiegel was born March 23, 1925, at Ida Grove, Iowa. She was the youngest of three children born to parents Raymond Price Conard and Eva Christine (Mann) Conard. A so-so student, she dropped out of high school after a spat with the principal, but returned at the tearful urging of her mother and graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1944.
On January 3, 1945, Pat was united in marriage to Herbert John Wiegel, also of Ida Grove. After brief stays in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Ida Grove, Pat and Herb settled in the Lake View area in March 1947. Here they made a home and raised four children: Rebecca, Lonn, and twins Feryle and Teryle.
In 1956, Pat entered the workforce, along with a growing number of working moms in the post-WWII era. From 1956 to 1961 she worked as a bookkeeper for Griffin Construction Co. of Lake View. In 1961, she became the bookkeeper for P.A.G. Seeds, Inc. (Pfister Associated Growers) in Sac City, and continued as plant manager after Cargill acquired the company. During those years, she also made time to serve as a Cub Scout den mother from 1958 to 1962 and teach Sunday school at the United Methodist Church. A casual housekeeper but an expert seamstress, she often spent evenings and weekends making clothes for the kids.
In 1977, she decided to devote more time to family and community. For many years, she worked part-time and kept books for Wiegel Construction Co. In addition to serving on the Lake View City Council from January 1980 to December 1991, she was actively involved in the Lake View Commercial Club from 1978 until the early 1990s, including serving as secretary/treasurer for several years. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Lake View.
Pat enjoyed all the talents and activities that life provided her, especially her family and her flowers. Survivors include children Rebecca Conard of Iowa City, Iowa; Lonn (Teresa) aboard sailing vessel Sapphire, currently berthed in Gulfport, Florida; Feryle (Michael) Berkland of Lakeside, Iowa; special niece Judy (Jim) Dickerson of Gretna, Nebraska; eight grandchildren who are serving as her pallbearers; twenty-one great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and many loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herb, son Teryle L., sister Feryle Fouts, brother William Conard, and her inlaws.
Her family would like you to know that Pat planned much of her funeral, including the peach pie and ice cream that will be served at lunch. We hope you will join us after the service to continue the celebration of her life.
