In December 1948 he was baptized and later confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. He grew up at the farm home where he was born and attended Goodrich Twp. #1 country school. On September 14, 1957, he was united in marriage to LaVon Finger at Peace Lutheran Church, Wall Lake, Iowa. This union was blessed with a son, David, and a daughter, Krista.
As a young man he worked as a farm hand for several farmers and also as a service station attendant in Storm Lake and Denison. In December 1948 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served throughout the Korean Conflict until being honorably discharged in 1953. Following his discharge, he worked for Evan’s Construction of Early, Iowa, on an electrical highline-construction crew. In 1955, he began working as an apprentice journeyman lineman for Iowa Public Service Company, Cherokee, Iowa. Then in 1963, he and his family moved to Sac City, Iowa, where he continued to work as a lineman and later, crew foreman for IPS, retiring in 1989 after 34 years.
He was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sac City, where, during his younger years, served as a trustee, Sunday school superintendent, high school youth leader (LYC), and for many years, head usher. He was a member of the National Cushman Club of America, as well as the Minnesota and Nebraska Cushman Clubs.
During earlier years of retirement, up to time of ill health, he enjoyed having coffee with his friends, doing yard work, spending time working on projects in his shop, lending a helping hand to neighbors and friends, as well as taking pride in the care and upkeep of his home. Perhaps, his favorite pastime was repairing, restoring, and riding Cushman scooters. He restored many scooters, not only for himself, but for others in this area and from various states. It was especially fun for him going to scooter meets, and for several years, hosted Cushman scooter meets at Sac City for other Cushman enthusiasts to come and ride for a weekend. His family will always remember him as being an energetic, hard-working man who very much loved and provided for them.
