Randall Ray Kelly was born on November 18, 1954 in Sac City, Iowa; son of Robert and Barbara (Clausen) Kelly. The family moved from Sac City to a farm near Jolley in 1958. Randy started school in 1961 at the Sherwood School west of Manson. He completed his education at Manson Community School District in 1977.
Randy lived and helped on the family farm near Jolley. He gathered eggs twice a day in the family’s 16,000 bird laying house. He was clever enough that he could pace himself in such a way that his sisters or mother would help him when they finished gathering eggs in their section. Randy was extremely dependable and task-oriented.
In 1980, the family opened Kellys’ Kafe in Jolley. One day after gathering eggs in the morning, Randy decided to ride his adult tricycle to Kellys’ Kafe. He made this decision on his own and just started pedaling. You can imagine the surprise of everyone when he showed up and ordered a hamburger! Randy soon realized he could speed up his egg gathering pace and ride his tricycle to Jolley every day to have lunch at Kellys’ Kafe. He loved people and loved socializing so he made it to town before the noon rush so he could have time to visit with everyone. Washing dishes at Kellys’ Kafe on Friday nights became another job Randy enjoyed. Serving between 150-200 people every Friday night brought lots of time for socializing for Randy. He began to hate doing dishes, but loved the people.
Randy was meticulous in everything he did. He had beautiful handwriting. Randy was adamant on keeping his room and possessions in pristine condition. When Randy wasn’t doing chores on the farm, washing dishes at Kellys’ Kafe or listening to records from his large record collection, he enjoyed watching television. He loved to read the TV Guide as soon as it came in the mail. He would read it and remember every single show he wanted to watch and know what time and what channel it was on….all without having Siri on an iPhone or Google Calendar to send him notifications! If there was a show he really wanted to watch, you did NOT want to be the one who made him miss it or late for it.
In 1988, Randy moved to the Howard Center Group Home in Sac City. He thoroughly enjoyed all the social interactions and outings while living at the Group Home. He had an apartment by himself for a short time, but decided he liked the Group Home atmosphere better. While living at in Sac City, Randy had various jobs including: washing dishes at the Lytton School, a paper route and worked at the Recycling Center. He enjoyed going to church and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
In June 2012, Randy moved to Park View Care Center. He enjoyed visits from his great-niece and great-nephew, especially at Halloween.
Randy was born with Down syndrome. He was a smart, loving, caring, honest person who only knew love and innocence. Randy had a great smile and laugh that he eagerly shared with the world, because the world was his friend.
Randy passed away on June 9, 2015, at Loring Hospital in Sac City. He is survived by his mother, Barbara of Jolley; sisters: Renae (Clay) Frank, Breda, and Pam Kelly (Jon Wiebers) Cedar Falls; nephews: Cody (Krystal) Frank, Auburn, Jerrid Frank, Auburn, Kyle Wiebers, Cedar Falls; and great-niece and great-nephews, Emma, Clayton and Barrett Frank, Auburn.
