Randall Dean Kreft, age 87, of Sac City, IA, passed away at Loring Hospital in Sac City on Tuesday, March 31, 2015.  Randall was born on January 1, 1928, on the farm in Coon Valley Township, Sac County, IA, to Oscar Edward and Clara Augusta (Krueger) Kreft.  He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.  He attended Sac County District #2 Coon Valley Township Country School through eighth grade and graduated from Sac City High School in 1945.  Following graduation, on April 10, 1946, Randall enlisted in the United States Army serving in Yokohama, Japan with Headquarters Company receiving and logging incoming and outgoing messages and communications.  On May 9, 1947, he was honorably discharged earning the rank of Pfc.

On March 10, 1952, Randall married the love of his life, Dorothy Lena Jorgensen in Guthrie Center, IA, at the Wichita Methodist Church.  They made their home south of Sac City on the family farm where together they raised their son Darwin.

Randy loved being a farmer.  He was a great steward of the land. His personal interests included flying and constructing a Pitts Biplane (which he almost finished) and has now been sold to another pilot who is finishing the plane. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and enjoyed attending flight breakfasts.  He loved dancing (swing and square) and enjoyed Big Band Music.  His favorite song was “Sentimental Journey” by Doris Day.  He also enjoyed playing cards, photography, travel, and everything about farming.  He rarely needed to call a repairman as he enjoyed “fixing” things, was an exceptional carpenter, welder, designer, and enjoyed the process of creating, whether that was a machine shed, toy cannon for a parade, an airplane, or an amazing stand of corn, soybeans, oats or alfalfa.  He was a faithful parishioner at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City.  He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his son Darwin Kreft and wife Dinna of Maple Grove, MN; grandchildren: Denise Kreft and husband Ben Skolnik of New York, NY, David Kreft of Maple Grove, MN, and Daniel Kreft of Maple Grove, MN; sister-in-law Rose Kreft of Sac City; nephew Oscar and wife Sue Kreft of Sac City; extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy on December 3, 2007; parents Oscar and Clara Kreft; and brother Oscar Duane Kreft.

“Darwin,
I enjoyed our visits in Sac City when we were both taking care of our parents. It's hard to lose a parent, but we rejoice in knowing that the suffering is no more and they are with God in their eternal home. Thinking of you and your family at this difficult time.”

“Dearest Darwin,
Our deepest condolences to you and your family on the passing of your beloved father.
We all know too well losing a loved one is never easy and nothing in the world can ever prepare us for this sad event.
Your dad was a wonderful, honorable, beloved good man, grandfather, friend, confidante to a lot of people. He was indeed a special man who will be forever missed.
May your Dad's fond sweet memories stay in your heart and continue to strengthen and nurture you with his love.
He is now at peace with your beloved Mom and other dearly departed loved ones.
May he rest in peace and God bless you and your family.
Love and prayers,
Tess and Frank Lanza”

“Darwin, sorry to hear about your dad's passing. I hope it was a peaceful journey. Seems every contact with my parents is an update on which friends and acquaintances have passed away. Lots of great memories from the neighborhood - shelling, baling, your dad dunking my brother Dave in the cattle tank head first, your mom's Halloween treats and of course the football games with all your special plays on recipe cards - my favorite was the Ronnie Run! Take Care!”

“Dear Darwin,

I am so sorry about your dad. I just now read his obituary. Wow! He was a man of many interests and talents. I smiled when I read the part about how he loved to dance and "Sentimental Journey" being his favorite song.
Please take care of yourself. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts.”
