Richard "Dick" Allen Mason, age 69, of Dalhart, Texas, formerly of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on January 17, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Home in Holstein, Iowa.  Dick was born on January  7, 1946 to David and Crystal (Spicer) Mason in Sac City, Iowa. He attended country school at Wall Lake #1 and graduated from Sac City High School.  Dick volunteered for the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam.

On March 2, 1967, he was joined in marriage to Diane Geerdes in Pomeroy, Iowa.  They are the parents of three children, Penny, Larry and Tammy.  They made their home in Pomeroy where Dick was an electrical contractor and they owned the local hardware store - Mason Hardware and Electric.  Dick's lifelong dream was to be a farmer, and in 1981 the family moved to Texas to pursue this dream.  They returned to Iowa in 1991 and farmed in the Newell area.  Dick missed the challenge of irrigated farming, and in 1994, they returned to farming in the Texas Panhandle and North Eastern New Mexico.  Dick enjoyed hard work as well as the research and development associated with building the family farm.  In his younger years, Dick enjoyed water skiing, roller skating, and listening and dancing to music.  Dick will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife Diane; his children Penny and husband Mark of Mount Vernon, Iowa; Larry and wife Nina of Dalhart, Texas; and Tammy and husband Matt of Cherokee, Iowa; mother Crystal Mason; brothers Jack (Judy) Mason, Jerry (Leslie) Mason, Charles (Linda) Mason and Mike Mason; sister Jeanette (Tom) Kentner; grandchildren Jennifer, Elizabeth, Jarett, Nicholas, Steven, Sara, J.R., Justine, and Simon; several great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.  He was preceded in death by his father David Mason, his aunt Rosella Spicer, and his mother and father in law.

“Hi - I was Dick's cousin (1/2 cousin?) as my dad was Dean and he was 1/2 brother with Dick's dad David. Boy that's a lot of Ds. I was sorry to hear Dick passed away. I know he struggled the last few years but I always remember him as being kind at the potlucks in Nemaha and when I would run into him in Storm Lake. My thoughts are with you at this time.”
