Kathryn L. Hammond Chinn

Kathryn L. Hammond Chinn, age 94, of Wall Lake, IA, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2011, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake, IA. Kathryn Louise McDermott was born on September 27, 1916, in Anthon, IA, the daughter of William and Carrie (King) McDermott. She was baptized into the United Church of Christ. She received her education in Anthon, IA. She married William Hammond, and they were blessed with seven children: Geneva, Norman, Shirley, Richard, Thomas, Janice, and Bernice. Later in life she went on to marry Dale Chinn.

Kathryn worked hard to make a home for her family, and she also worked outside the home as a bartender. She had an extensive doll collection and enjoyed sewing clothes to dress them. She loved to garden and grew many flowers, she also like to cross-stitch, play cards, and go fishing. Her family remembers her homemade noodles and cherished the special dishes she liked to make for each of her children.

Kathryn lived independently until June 2, 2011. As she became unable to care for herself, she chose to move to Twilight Acres Nursing Home. She will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Norman (Patsy) Hammond of Wall Lake, IA, Shirley (Scotty) Hoaglund of Lake View, IA, Thomas (Sherri) Hammond of Lake View, IA; and Bernice (Donald) Roth of Odebolt, IA; daughter-in-law Marty Hammond of Cherokee, IA; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.
