Melvin R. Wright, age 92, of Early, IA, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Loring Hospital in Sac City, IA. Melvin was born on July 31, 1919, in Herring, IA the son of C.W. “Bill” and Tena (Meyer) Wright. He was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Schaller. Melvin attended school and graduated from Carnarvon Country School. He then went on to further his education at Barber School. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 10, 1945. He served during WWII with the Occupation Forces in Japan, until his honorable discharge in November 2, 1946. He worked as a retail grocer, insurance salesman and a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.

Melvin met his life-partner in B. Mildred Miller and was united in marriage on October 30, 1941 in Schaller, IA. To this union three children were born: Darwin, Sue and Bill. Melvin and Mildred made their home in Early and remained there for 70 years. Melvin enjoyed playing golf, dancing with Mildred, and was an avid card player. Most of all, he cherished time spent with his loving wife, children, and grandchildren. He will be remembered for being a devoted father, never missing an event where his children were involved.

He was very active in the community for many years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Early, serving on the church board, and a member of the Merton V. Hair American Legion Post No. 325 in Early. Melvin served on the Early Town Council, was a member of the Early Fire Department, and the Early Masonic Lodge. He also was the announcer for the Crestland High School football games for many years.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 70 years: B. Mildred Wright of Sac City; children: Darwin Wright of Bartlett, TN, Sue (Tom) Landgraf of Mason City, IA, and Bill Wright of Odebolt, IA; sisters: Darlane Campbell of Spencer, IA, Delores Blessington of Lake View, IA, and Donna Daiker of Onamia, MN; grandchildren: Tyler (Chelsea) Landgraf of Springfield, MO, Robert Landgraf of Rochester, MN, and Hannah Landgraf of Indianola, IA; great-grandchildren: Keira and Max Landgraf; and numerous cousins, extended family members and friends.
