Bernard E. Fertig

Bernard Elwood Fertig, 85, of Wall Lake, IA, passed away Sunday, November 2, 2014 at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake. Bernie was born May 10, 1929, to LaVern and Vera (Worden) Fertig at the home of his grandparents’, Jed and May Worden, in Cook Township, Sac County, IA. He was baptized September 13, 1931 and confirmed in 1944 at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake.

Bernie served in the army during the Korean War in Germany, from January 14, 1953 to December 24, 1954. He always enjoyed telling humorous stories about the time that he spent in the army. Bernie was united in marriage to Mary Ann Stegemann at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, IA on September 23, 1956. They celebrated their 58th anniversary in September.

He started helping his dad farm as a young boy and grew to love farming. When he returned from the service, he was once again able to farm with his dad. He started by milking cows, gradually increasing his herd. First milking by hand and then by machine. Today, Dale and Sharon and their children are still milking cows and farming. Bernie would like to say that he started the Fertig tradition of milking cows. Farming was Bernie’s life, when he was no longer able to farm because of his health, he missed it dearly.

No one was a stranger to Bernie and he always enjoyed visiting with anyone. He also loved doing farm work and farmed until he was unable to, a few years ago. He enjoyed looking at the crops and hearing how they were doing. Family meant a lot to him and he enjoyed having them come visit.
