“I admired Mr Perry for always being himself in a place where that isn't easy. I often thought it would be nice to run into him again now that I'm older and have much more of a clue about life and music. He was very talented -- I still get the song he wrote for our WLVA choir stuck in my head. Godspeed Mr. Perry and condolences to all who were close to him. ”

“We have been members of Grace Lutheran for about 10 years but many of those I had assignments at other congregations. We join Grace because of the beautiful services that Bruce always assembled. They fed us spiritually and always left us feeling humble at the gifts that Bruce had shared. This Fourth of July is going to be special for me as we enjoy the bright and beautiful display but also, like with Bruce, it is too short when gone. God gave Bruce a tremendous gift which he shared with so many. It speaks of the love that sharing one's gift can bring and honor God at the same time. “I was so sorry to learn of my friend Bruce. There are few careers in life more rewarding than teaching and mentoring young people. Bruce was one of the very best and helped many young performers to improve and excel. My sincere gratitude for his support of the talent search for many years. He will be missed, but never forgotten”

“The first time I met Bruce was when he became the director of the Fort Dodge Area Civic Glee Club (formerly known as the Mens Civic Glee Club- which was before his wonderful director-ship of the Chorale Society. I truly appreciated his passion for the music we sang. Also, I was fortunate to play violin under him for the Chorale Society and was hoping to do so again at Grace Lutheran. He truly had the "touch" when playing as an accompanist. A great talent and man!”

“I taught 8th grade literature and 10 grade American Literature in Sac City in the late 1970's, Bruce was one of my students, a good-hearted, intelligent boy. It pleases me to hear of his success in life and saddens me to learn of his passing. He had much to give and I'm glad others benefitted from his talents.”

“I've been sitting quietly this evening thinking about my dear friend, mentor and confidante. How does one help others understand the totality of Bruce's gifts? I was describing him to another of his close friends and expressed that he was the most affirming people I've ever known. He could be witty, snarky ( when in a private conversation), supportive, and insightful. His greatest gift was his ability to set aside a task in order to lean into what the individual needed in the moment. Maybe it was to put the piano lid down and ask what was bothering them, or to engage in a conversation just to connect. I could go on for ages. I will miss, miss, miss him. Love you my friend.”

“I first met Bruce over 20 years ago when my husband and I joined Grace Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge. I was immediately impressed by his musical skills at the piano and pipe organ and soon came to appreciate his directorial passion when I joined the church choir. He could take a relatively rag tag group of singers and turn us into a real choir. Later, as I worked with Bruce decorating the church for different seasons of the church year, I realized that he had a unique vision of design, color and purpose that is rarely seen in small congregations. His musical talents, organizational skills, and friendly advise will be greatly missed by me and many others. We are truly blessed to have had Bruce in our lives.”

“ Webster defines the word "muse" as a personified force who is the source of inspiration...No better word describes the man whom we in the Fort Dodge Choral Society (FDCS) are mourning today - Maestro Bruce Perry. For the past thirty years, he has served with honor and distinction as mentor and friend to hundreds of people from around the Midwest who shared - either directly or indirectly - his incredible vision. He was the eighth and our longest-serving conductor. It is safe to say that his name will always be associated with FDCS!
Those of us who considered ourselves patrons of his art were continually amazed and awed by how he would weave a musical tapestry into a concert theme. Many concerts had as their goal to increase awareness of a social issue. Those issues included World Peace, Alzheimer's, Teen Suicide, Breast Cancer, Bullying, Homelessness, and AIDS awareness just to name a few. In addition to those concerts which strove for change through advocacy, many more sought to celebrate the genius and power of the works of both traditional and modern-day composers. We all anxiously waited for him to reveal his vision for the new season. Incredibly, he prepared the group for more than a hundred different concerts. Plans for Bruce's final celebration of life include pieces by many of his favorite composers.
As so many others have observed, he was a cheerful force of nature. He was anywhere and everywhere all at once. His reputation reflected a lifetime of dedication to the furtherance of vocal music excellence in everything he did. His long-time association with FDCS notwithstanding, he served an equally long period of time as worship and musical coordinator for Grace Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge, Iowa. As a teacher, he worked with and mentored many of the area's finest singers - - more than forty of his former students are pursuing careers in the musical world. As a pianist, he performed throughout the Midwest and Brazil.
Painful as it is, FDCS is taking steps to move forward as Bruce would want us to do. For the reasons noted above and countless others unacknowledged, Bruce's legacy will carry us forward and continue to inspire us. In this, we can do nothing less. God Bless and keep you, Bruce Perry.

“I met Bruce for the first time through email in 2020. I was finishing my masters in public history and required an internship. Eager to move out of my home state and start anew, Bruce gave me a chance and I proudly interned for Preservation Iowa during the fall of 2021. I will always remember him as kind, funny, quick-witted, bright, and always willing to lend an ear. I was privileged to see his enormous impact first-hand, and for that I am grateful. My heart is with his family, friends, and community that he so dearly loved. Bruce will be profoundly missed.”

“How can there be so few words in this man's obituary? Bruce always had something to say! My heart aches for all who have been touched by Bruce's many areas of talent. And though I never took a lesson, could only get by by trying desperately to blend in with singers alongside me in church, and never played the piano beyond chopsticks, Bruce allowed me, my former husband (who had tons of talent!), and my children into his life. When did he sleep? This I know: he will never be replaced by one person alone. The work he put into all the other-already-mentioned things, his talent, his dedication, and his inspiration will take a large village. I will remember all of his Mountain Dew, his car (how many miles did he travel in a month??) filled with music, his eyebrows going up when a good joke was shared, his love for Sac City and his beloved family, and his never-ending dedication to filling our world with music like no other. He worked until the day he died. And only now, he rests. My deepest sympathies to all who mourn his passing. May that large village of people be inspired to take up where this remarkable man led.”

“There wasn't much that Bruce couldn't do! He was intelligent, thorough, kind, and musical beyond words. He contributed so much to the Chautauqua Singers, directed the choral group when we sang the Christmas program at the Presbyterian church, and helped so many of us that needed it with vocal and piano assistance and was just a nice, caring man. Thanks for just being you! Rest in peace. Mariann and Terry Alcorn”

“I would like to give my condolences to the family of Bruce Perry and all the people that he influenced, whether it be in music and/or through community service. Bruce became my voice coach in high school and showed me that I had a gift, and helped me turn it into a life long love of singing. From high school allstate, to college scholarship and competing in the regional metropolitan opera competition, Bruce inspired and helped me through it all. Bruce Invited me back to sing with his coral society multiple times. We also were able to sing togather one time with the pearl fisher's duet. Bruce was also able to help my son with a music scholarship with the university of nebraska. A generaltional gift that I and my son were truly grateful. And Bruce was there to accompany me when I was sang for my mother's funeral. Bruce had a way of Inspiring me to do more and get the most out of my talent. He had a way of instilling confidence in singers to bring out their best. It Is truly a remarkable gift as a coach. I have enjoyed singing my whole life and showing my Passion in my singing in which Bruce taught me to do. I will be forever grateful for Bruce's impact in my life with my love of music. ”

“Bruce Perry gave me piano lessons and, later, voice coaching in the early 90s and I learned a great deal from him about both music and life. Mr Perry demanded excellence from his students and often got it. Whereas performing music was an extracurricular activity for me, it was a lifelong passion for him and that always shone through in his teaching. Intelligent, witty and civic-minded, he was a positive influence in my formative years and later a real asset to historic preservation in Sac County. My sincere condolences to his family. ”
