Bernice Roth, age 79 of Wall Lake, IA, passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family. Bernice Fay Hammond was born on August 30, 1943, to parents William and Katherine (McDermott) Hammond in Oto, IA. She attended country school and then graduated from Oto High School with the class of 1961. After graduating, Bernice attended cosmetology school in Sioux City, IA.
On October 2, 1965, Bernice married Donald Lloyd Roth. This union was blessed with three children, Dan, Lori, and Jeff. Together they raised their family on a farm in Wall Lake. Bernice stayed home with their children until school-age at which time she started working at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake. She worked at Twilight Acres for over thirty years and always enjoyed getting to know the residents.
Bernice was a ‘small but mighty’ lady. Hard work didn’t intimidate her and she did well instilling hard-working values into her children. She always had a garden and canned the produce once harvested. Bernice also enjoyed flower gardening every spring and summer. She liked being outdoors and especially enjoyed family camping trips. Every 4th of July the family stayed in a cabin in Okoboji, something they always looked forward to. Bernice and Don liked playing cards and were in several card clubs together over the years. Their Saturday nights usually consisted of watching Molly B’s Polka Party on TV as they both enjoyed Polka music. Bernice was also a huge Elvis Presley fan.
Bernice was an amazing cook and baker as well. She loved making big meals for the whole family. She made special requested birthday meals for anyone in her family on their birthday that everyone gathered for. Sunday meals were also a big deal in her home. Being with her family was the most important thing to Bernice. Any chance she could get them all together, she would. Her presence here on earth will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved. Rest assured she is now residing in God’s beautiful paradise, free of any and all pain.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Dan (Tina) Roth of Wall Lake, IA, Lori (Scott) Boom of Lake View, IA, and Jeff Roth of Odebolt, IA; grandchildren: Kelsey (Tate) Wilken of Odebolt, IA, Kaleb (Emily) Roth of Omaha, NE, Kody Roth of Wall Lake, IA, Konner Roth of Des Moines, IA, Cordel Boom of Lake View, IA, Carlee Boom (Stetson Ihnen) of Sioux Falls, SD, Jonathan Arter of Wall Lake, IA, and Sophie Hansen of Manning, IA; great-grandchildren Owen and Rhett Wilken, Porter and Beckett Roth; brothers Norman Hammond of Wall Lake, IA, and Tom (Sherrie) Hammond of Lake View, IA; sister Shirley Hoaglund of Lake View, IA; sisters-in-law Sandie Roth of Wall Lake, IA, and Marty Hammond of Cherokee, IA; many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Don Roth in January 2023; parents William and Katherine Hammond; parents-in-law Lloyd and Loretta Roth; brother Dick Hammond; sisters Janice (Leonard) Karstens and Geneva Fowler; brother-in-law James Roth; sister-in-law Pat Hammond; and nephew Ronnie Karstens.
