Marion Dettmann, age 96 of Lytton, IA, passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at Park View Care Center in Sac City, IA. Marion Rickard was born on March 29, 1926, in Bozeman, MT, the only child to parents Frank and Edith (MacDonald) Rickard. She and her parents moved to find work during the depression moving to the Chicago area, then to Minneapolis, and finally back to Montana. In 1942 the family moved to Spokane, WA, where Marion attended John Rogers High School. She graduated from there with the class of 1942. Marion then attended Washington State University in 1950 and obtained her Bachelor’s Degree.
Marion met Dale Kroeger who was from Iowa, in Colorado while having coffee one morning. The couple married in 1955 in Wray County Colorado. Marion worked for the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension Service for thirty-three years. Marion loved her job and through it was very involved in the 4-H program and with so many children and families over the years. Dale passed away in 1981 and before retiring in 1984, Marion was wed to Clifford Dettmann from Lytton, IA, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sac City, IA. Clifford was a great friend of the couple, in fact, he was the best man at Dale and Marion’s wedding. Together the two of them kept very active. They enjoyed traveling all around the United States and often times took their camper with. They faithfully attended the annual Sturgis rally on their Harley Davidson motorcycle, Marion being a passenger in the sidecar.
Marion was a tell-it-like-it-is gal. She was outgoing and liked to have fun. She was a member of the Red Hat Ladies group as well as president of the Women of St. Paul. She liked to sew in her spare time and always enjoyed a game of dominos with the Lytton ladies. She often spoke of being an only child and feeling blessed to have married Clifford which meant she would acquire many nieces and nephews. She loved her family and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include sister-in-law Glennadine Dettmann of Lake View, IA; nieces and nephews, Darla Hysing of Arizona, Dennis E. (Debbie) Dettmann of Sac City, IA, Edward Deck of Georgia, Nancy Deck (Michael Gross) of Washington, DC, Fred Wise of Osceola, IA, Kenny (Karen) Wise of Lytton, IA, and Rob (Pam) Wise of Rockwell City, IA; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; close friends Tom and Pat Sullivan of Greeley, CO; other extended family members and friends.
