Harry Shanks, age 79 of Wall Lake, IA, passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2022, in Omaha, NE. Harry Martin Shanks was born on February 8, 1943, to parents Edward and Ruby (Shull) Shanks in Sac City, IA. He grew up in Sac City and was baptized at the First Christian Church in Sac City. Harry attended grade school and later graduated from Sac City High school with the class of 1962. After graduation, Harry enlisted to serve his country in the United States Army in May of 1964. He served in Vietnam earning the rank of E-5. Harry received a Vietnam Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and a Vietnam Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in May of 1968.
After his discharge, Harry returned to the Wall Lake area and began farming and working at Carroll Coolers. He was united in marriage to Mary Irlbeck and had three sons, John, Benjamin, and Michael. Mary later passed away. Later in life, Harry met his companion, Joleen Dohm. Harry loved horses, playing cards, and going Polka dancing. He was also a long-time member of the V.F.W.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children John (Kim) Shanks of Omaha, NE, and Benjamin (Donna) Shanks of Auburn, IA; partner and friend Joleen Dohm of Omaha, NE; stepdaughter Sarah (Andy) Segabart of Carroll, IA; grandchildren: Kayla Ehrig, Jarod Shanks, Hannah Shanks, Chloee Shanks, Bailey Shanks, and Josie Shanks; step-grandchildren: Madeline, Elizabeth, and Adam; brothers Robert (Becky) Shull and Richard (Karen) Shull; many other extended family members and friends.
Harry was preceded in death by his wife Mary; son Michael Shanks; parents Edward and Ruby Shanks; stepfather Robert Shull; sister Nancy Bartels; and grandparents Harry and Jessie Penniman and John and Anna Shanks.
