On March 16, 1942, Lona was united in marriage to Bertram I. Coats. This union was blessed with two children: Betty Jean and William Avery. They made their home in Sac City. Bert passed away June 3, 1978.Lona was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, and making lovely items for her home and as gifts. She had many talents: knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, embroidery and painting - using heavy oils and specializing in landscapes. Lona worked for Johnson Studio and Waller Studio for many years, tinting portraits and later, retouching color negatives. She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sac City.

Lona was married to Russell B. Hicks on May 14, 1983. They enjoyed many things together; playing cribbage, dancing and particularly traveling, having made trips around the US and to Europe, England, New Zeeland, Hawaii, Nova Scotia and Alaska. Russell passed away on July 20, 2008.

In an interview while living at Park View her advice to the younger generation was “Live Life To The Fullest.” Lona always had a warm smile to greet you. Family dinners and birthdays were not complete if we did not have Grandma’s chocolate pie. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
