Shirley Higgins, age 85 of Sac City, IA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, October 8, 2021, at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City.
Shirley Ann Bundt was born on February 25, 1936, to parents Earl and Edna (Polzien) Bundt in Wall Lake, IA. She and her family were members of Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake where she was baptized as an infant on March 29, 1936, and on April 15, 1945, at the age of nine, she publicly confessed her faith and was confirmed. Shirley and her brother, Lyle, were raised in Wall Lake where they both attended school. Shirley graduated from Wall Lake High School with the class of 1953.
On December 20, 1953, Shirley was united in marriage to Robert Gene Higgins at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake. Bob and Shirley lived in Fort Bragg, North Carolina for three years while Bob served in the United States Army and then moved to Sac City. This union was blessed with four children: Sandy, Richard, Susan, and Leann. They raised their family in Sac City where Shirley worked as a secretary at Farm Service before retiring in 1996.
Shirley was such a fun gal and if you knew her, you loved her. She loved to go shopping with family and friends and was ALWAYS up for a trip to the casino. She traveled to many places including trips with the Friendship Club. Shirley always stayed busy out and about in the community.
Her family meant the world to her. Having tea parties and playing slap-jack with her grandchildren brought her such great joy. She made so many great memories with them that they will forever hold dear in their hearts. She was a great cook and loved to bake. It made her heart happy to be able to cook for others, as she enjoyed entertaining both family and friends.
Shirley’s faith was very important to her. In fact, it was her deep faith that carried her through losing three of her children. Psalm 147:3 says: He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. To have faith in these words, can only help one suffering such grief. The love a mother has for her children is like no other love and it ONLY falls second to the love God has for each and every one of us. Rest assured as she was welcomed into God’s loving arms, that Sandy, Richard, and Susan were right there beside Him, awaiting her arrival. May she rest eternally in His beautiful paradise.
Left to cherish Shirley’s memory include her husband Bob Higgins of Sac City, IA; daughter Leann (Kevin) Petersen of Greenville, MI; grandchildren: Amber (Kevin) Christ, Mike Auen, Kristi Terpstra, Erica (Kyle) Janes, Tanner Morris, Alec Petersen, Britney (Jacob) Hardin, Brandi Blum, Nikki Blum, and Stephanie Blum; great-grandchildren: Jordan, Jaelyn, and Jenna Degner, Jackson Christ, Jude and Crew Janes, Emma and Paityn Hardin, Cooper, Carson, and Malia Auen, Drake and Aryana Terpstra, and George Davis; brother Lyle (Jane) Bundt of Breda, IA; many other extended family members and friends.
