Julia M. Russell

Julia Mae Russell, age 100, of Sac City, IA, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2014, at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge, IA.

Julia was born on May 30, 1913, to parents Dolph and Flossie (Griswold) Peyton in Sac County, Iowa. She attended country school and graduated from Sac City High School in 1930 with a degree in Normal Training, which qualified her to teach in country schools. Julia taught for 3 years before her May 30, 1934, marriage to Orville Vernon Russell. They were blessed with four children: Sherrill, Scott, Karen, and Kirk. Julia was baptized in 1927 at the First Christian Church in Sac City where she remained a lifetime member. She served as an elder and deaconess and was an active member in Christian Women’s Fellowship.

Julia was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a loyal friend. She enjoyed reading, traveling, golfing, playing cards, and all events concerning her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She kept books for Russell Oil Co. for 45 years. After Orville’s death in 2003, she moved to Oak Terrace in Sac City. Julia’s genuine interest in others and her quick wit endeared her to many. She will long be remembered for her loving spirit and beautiful smile.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Sherrill Stedman of Sac City, IA; Scott (Linda) Russell of Sac City, IA; Karen (Ken) Ossian of Bettendorf, IA; and Kirk (Debbie) Russell of Fort Dodge, IA. Grandchildren are Dave, Dennis, and Don Stedman; Jon Russell and Shannon Mazza; Mike and Derek Ossian; and Scott and Matt Russell; her nine great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild plus many extended family members and friends.
