Joan Maxine (Shadle) Wilkerson, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2020, at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City. Joan was born on June 21, 1938, the daughter of Robert (Bob) and Mildred (Woehl) Shadle on a farm northeast of Sac City. Joan attended Country School Cedar #2 until 7th grade, when the school closed, and then attended Sac City High School where she graduated in 1956.
Joan went on to work at the Sac County Courthouse for the Assessor’s office until 1961 and then worked in the Clerk of Court’s office as Deputy Clerk until 1967.
On June 21, 1959, Joan was united in marriage to Marvin Wilkerson at the First Christian Church in Sac City of which she was a member.
In July of 1967 they purchased the former Leonard Greenhouse, changing the name to Marjo Flowers because of Marvin’s and Joan’s names. Joan went to Chicago to a design school to help in the greenhouse. Later she resigned at the courthouse and became a full time designer. When Marvin’s health grew worse they sold Marjo Flowers. Marvin passed away in 2002. She then continued design work with Denise Lake at Giftique for several years.
Joan continued to be involved in the community. She was active with the museum, helped with flowers at the church and enjoyed playing cards with her bridge club. She served on her church board, was a member of the Sac Education Foundation, member of the Loring Hospital Auxiliary, and was a past president of Wa Tan Ye. Joan served on the Sac Community School Hall of Fame Board of Trustees for the first five years that it was founded and was secretary/treasurer for four years. In 2004 she was inducted into the Sac Community Hall of Fame.
Joan is survived by a host of friends and extended family who will remember her for her lovely smile and her kindness and generosity to others. Joan was preceded in death by her father, Robert Shadle, mother Mildred Shadle, and husband Marvin Wilkerson.
