Rachel Anne Hutchinson, age 92, of Sac City, IA, passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at Loring Hospital in, Sac City, IA, surrounded by her family. Rachel was born on April 23, 1926, in rural Lytton, IA, to Charlie and Mabel (Poland) Carter. She attended Lytton school and graduated from there as class valedictorian in 1944. Rachel lettered in Glee Club and band.
On March 26, 1945, Rachel married Verl Hutchinson in Lytton, IA. This union was blessed with five daughters: Jan, Carol, Rita, Diane and Karen. They celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary together. The couple spent their winters in Arizona for around 30 years.
Rachel was known for her incredible baking and liked to can food from her garden. She made wonderful cookies, lemon bars, pies with homemade pie crusts and cheesecakes. Sunday dinners were always special and if it was your birthday, she made you an angel food cake. Rachel was a 4-H leader and also taught Sunday school. She loved camping with her family and participated in a lot of watermelon eating contests. She had a great sense of humor. She was always there for her family with love and support. Rachel was so proud of her daughters and was especially happy to become a ‘mom of boys’ after they married. Becoming a grandma meant everything to her and she was lucky enough to become a great as well as great-great grandma during her time here on earth. Rachel had an inner beauty and gentle spirit that will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters: Jan (Steve) Pullen, Carol (Tim) Nixon, Rita (Bob) Neuhring, Diane (Leonard) Simpson, Karen (Dick) Shull; 11 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; 2 step great-great grandchildren; brothers Dwight Carter, Lark (Ruth) Carter; sisters-in-law Anna Marie Carter, Doris (Sharon) Mayo, Lorine (Harlan) Schade; many extended family members and friends.
Rachel was preceded in death by her husband Verl; her parents; sister Marjorie Biery; brother Donald Carter; granddaughters Jennie Jo Shull and Jenny Freese.
