Lucille was born on January 18, 1917, near Lake City, IA to parents J. Otto and Clara (Hamlin) Gidel. She attended high school in Lohrville, she accepted Christ as her Savior at the age of ten. After high school she married Elmo Spencer in 1936. They made their home on the “Ditzel Farm” north of Yetter. To this union four children were born. Elmo passed away in 1946 of a heart attack. In 1947 she attended beauty school and opened a beauty shop in Lytton in 1948.
In 1950 she married Millard Simpson, to this union three children were born. She loved to work with children and was active with CEF (Child Evangelism Fellowship) with her friend Faye Crabb and was active in AWANA at her church, Faith Bible Church, until she was in her early 90’s. She also was active in the VFW and enjoyed visiting with people she met.
Lucille passed away at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View on Sunday, April 6, 2014. Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Sandra (Don) Heath, Sioux City; Judy (Darrell) VandeKrol, Oskaloosa; Kay (Gary) Streeter, Lake City; Carol (Ron) Gregg, Lake City; Leonard (Diane) Simpson, Ken (Val) Simpson and Doug (Peg) Simpson all of Sac City; grandchildren: Becky (Stewart) Melboarn, Mike (Debra) Heath, Gary (Anita) Heath, John (Carolyn) Heath, Wayne (Angela) VandeKrol, Warren VandeKrol, Ward VandeKrol, Shelly Levall, Matt Streeter, Todd (Teresa) Gregg, James (Deanna) Gregg, Brenda Simpson, Trent (Jennifer) Simpson, Tim (Melanie) Simpson, Reena (Evan) Hanson, Tina (Mike) Zimmerman, Bobby (Angie) Simpson, Mandy (Kevin) Hedberg, and Greg Simpson; 40 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Other survivors include her brothers: Hank Gidel, Lake City and Paul Gidel, Des Moines; and sister-in-law Lorraine Gidel, Leona Valley, CA.
