Kate Horst

Kate Horst, age 92, of Wall Lake, IA, passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2014, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake, IA.

Kate and her twin sister Anne were born on June 25, 1922, to Henry and Hilke (Smit) Horst in Carnarvon, IA. She attended country school at Levey #8, Herring, IA and Levey #12 near Wall Lake. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was a life-time member of Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake.

Kate worked at the National Oats Popcorn Company in Wall Lake for many years, retiring June 25, 1987. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading, playing cards, word searches and bowling. Kate loved to cook for her family and friends and her pies were special requests at many gatherings. Her grandchildren were very dear to her. She loved their visits and spending time with them. Kate took many vacations with her family to the Ozarks, Colorado, California, Hawaii, and Washington. Traveling to Arizona in her retirement years and being a snowbird was so fun for her. She even took up golf.

Survivors include her son, Robert Janssen and wife Terry of Windsor, CO; two grandchildren: Jennifer Slocum and husband Brian of Puyallup, WA and Stephanie Janssen of Windsor, CO; great-grandchildren: Zachary, Makenzie, and Hailey Slocum and Serena Feliciano; sister Henrietta Schultz and husband Lloyd of Omaha, NE; sisters-in-law: Bernice Horst of Wall Lake, IA and Genevieve Horst of Auburn, IA; Randy and Nancy Lanning and family of South Sioux City, NE and John and Jean Raine and family of Humboldt, IA; many nieces, nephews, and other family members.
