Martha Jane (Durbin) Cady, the daughter of James and Dagmar (Andreasen) Durbin, was born on December 24, 1933, at home in Coon Rapids, Iowa. She was the thirteenth child in their family of nineteen children.  After a courageous fight with lung cancer, Martha died on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View at the age of 83, where she had resided for the past year and a half.

On December 7, 1953, Martha was united in marriage to Merrill L. Cady in Carroll, Iowa.  Merrill was in the service, and they were stationed in Salt Lake City, Utah and Baltimore, Maryland.  After his discharge from the service, they moved to Sac City in 1954, and became members of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ.   Martha was a Sunday School teacher, CYF sponsor and a deaconess in the church.

Martha worked at DaLe Monogramming Co. for over 35 years, producing school athletic letters for teams throughout the Midwest, and personalized apparel.  She loved gardening, crocheting, knitting, and had a passion for reading.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and a friend to many.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Merrill; daughters, Kathy (Steve) Gerdes of Normal, IL; Karen Jackson of Edmond, OK; and Kelly (Tony) Lomelino of St. Cloud, FL; six grandchildren; Kiera Winslow, Brian Jackson, Randy Sturridge, Scott Jackson, Ariel Carmean, and Alex Jackson, as well as four great-grandchildren; one brother, Gary (Betty) Durbin, and two sisters, Carolyn (Dick) Lanning, and Deanna Firebaugh, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Verna, Ina Mae, Dorothy, Betty Jean, June, and Eleanora; and brothers, William, Wayne, Roy, Harold, Lynn, Dale, James, and twins, Lester and Loren.

Memorials may be sent to Kindred Hospice, 831 N Griffith Rd, Carroll, IA, 50401 or to the First Christian Church, 521 Park Ave, Sac City, IA, 50583.

“Dear family. The death of a loved one can be hard to bear. Please take comfort in knowing that your Heavenly Father understands your pain as He too experienced the death of his only son, Jesus Christ. Job 14: 14, 15 shows that God yearns to bring your dear loved one back to life in the future now so near. Please visit the website JW.ORG for more information about this subject. Please accept my heartfelt condolence for your loss.

“For every life has a purpose to fill, a purpose which us humans can seldom infer. But she was a gift from heaven, whose purpose was to make this world understand what love, friendship, goodness, and humbleness was all about. Goodness belongs to heaven, and I know she is watching us from there, bestowing her beautiful smile upon us. May her soul rest in peace.”
