Dorothy Joan Vrana, age 80, of Sac City, IA, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA. 
     Joan was born on July 21, 1936, in Schaller, IA, to Fredrick Arthur and Dorothy (Anderson) Wilson.  She graduated from Schaller High School in 1954 and later completed her studies at DMACC receiving her LPN in nursing.  She was married to John Vrana and to this union six children were born: Bonnie, Debbie, Judy, Susan, John, and Marie.  Joan and John were later divorced.
     Joan worked as an LPN at Methodist Manor for 8 or 9 years, and also worked at Park View Care Center and Good Samaritan Care Center for several years.  Joan especially loved to sew and quilt and was a member of the Storm Lake Quilt Sewciety and a friend’s Birthday Club for over 40 years.  She was very fond of her cats and dogs and over the years had many special pets.
     Joan was a wonderful mother and grandmother.  She loved spending time with her family.  She enjoyed baking and making candy for the holidays and especially loved quilting and made many special quilts for new grandbabies and graduations. Family and friends will treasure the quilts she has made. Survivors include her daughters: Bonnie (Bruce) Rahn of Sac City, Deb Straight of Arthur, Judy (Greg) Peck of St. James, MN, Susan (Bob) Berger of Humboldt, NE, and Marie Kirsch (Robert) Purtle of Cedar Rapids; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.  Joan is also survived by her sisters: Doreen (Gene) Kestel of Storm Lake, Marjorie (Doug) Hussey of Ida Grove, Glennis Koth of Holstein, and Cheril Haack of Schaller; many extended family members and friends.
     She was preceded in death by her parents; son John Vrana; sister Bonnie Filer; son-in-law Richard Straight; grandchildren: Michelle Campbell, Brian Campbell and Heather Strandberg; and great-great grandchildren: Lucas Shelton and Aiden Campbell.
