Gary Bogue, age 78 of Lake View, IA, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 20, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
   Gary Michael Bogue was born on November 3, 1947, in Sac City, IA, to parents Walter and Dorothy (Phillips) Bogue. He was baptized and confirmed at Lakes United Methodist Church in Lake View. He grew up on a farm outside of Sac City and attended grade school in Lake View before graduating from Lake View-Auburn High School with the Class of 1966. During his high school years, Gary was an outstanding football player. He enjoyed playing the sport while in the Navy as well.
   Following graduation, Gary worked alongside his father in the carpentry business. In 1967, he was drafted into the United States Army and shortly thereafter joined the United States Navy. During his time in the Navy Gary worked on C-130 aircraft. His service took him to places many people only dream of seeing, including New Zealand, the Philippines, and even Antarctica. Gary proudly served his country until his honorable discharge on March 8, 1971.
   On October 19, 1974, Gary was united in marriage to the love of his life, Mary Jo Gerdes, in Sac City, IA. The two had met through Gary’s brother, Bob, who was a friend of Mary’s. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Sarah, Ainsley, and Bill.
   Gary raised and bred several breeds of dogs, including Huskies, Malamutes, Samoyeds, and Irish Setters. In 1975, Gary and Mary built a home on a farm outside of Lake View, where they raised their family and made countless memories together.
   Gary began working for Stock Popcorn in the mid-1970s and eventually went to work for Pella Corporation in Carroll, IA. He remained there until retiring due to health reasons.
   Gary was happiest when he had something to build, repair, or tinker with. A true handyman and do-it-yourselfer, he firmly believed there wasn’t much that couldn’t be fixed with a little duct tape and glue. Buying something new was rarely Gary’s first choice when he knew perfectly well the old one could still be repaired. That resourcefulness was simply part of who he was.
   Football remained a favorite pastime throughout Gary’s life. He enjoyed cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers and watching the Kansas City Chiefs. He also had a playful side and loved joking around, teasing, and pulling the occasional prank. Those who knew him well knew there was always a little mischief behind his smile. He was, in the best sense of the word, a true scallywag.
   Traveling was especially important to Gary and Mary. When their children were young, family vacations were something they made a priority nearly every year. Even after the children were grown and had homes of their own, Gary and Mary continued exploring together. Hawaii held a particularly special place in their hearts; they traveled there at least 17 times. They also enjoyed trips to Florida, California, South Dakota, and many other destinations, including Agawam, Massachusetts visiting his close friend Butch and the entire Pignatare family. For Gary, the places they visited were special, but it was sharing those experiences with the people he loved that mattered most.
   Above everything else, Gary was a family man. He was never someone who needed to be out and about or in the middle of everything happening in the community. He was perfectly content being at home, surrounded by Mary, their children, grandchildren, and the rest of his family. They were his world, and there was nowhere he would rather be than with them.
   Gary lived his life in his own unique way—hardworking, resourceful, fun-loving, a little mischievous, and deeply devoted to the people who meant the most to him. He will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him. We lost our hero, our man of steel….our superman.

   Gary is survived by his wife, Mary Bogue of Lake View, IA; daughter Sarah Shultz of Wall Lake, IA; son Bill (Emily) Bogue of Lake View, IA; grandchildren: Sabrina Koopman (Jack Benisvy), Connor Morris (Ariel Lenahan), Isaack and Joseph Schultz, and Walter Bogue; great-grandson Niko Benisvy; brothers Bob (Lori) Bogue of Lake View, IA, and Ron (Rosanne) Bogue of Lincoln, CA; sister-in-law Brenda (Dave) Snyder of Lake View, IA; brother-in-law Robert (Karen) Uren of Hinton, IA; many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Dorothy Bogue; daughter Ainsley Bogue; son-in-law David Shultz, sister Barb (Jerry) Reiling; sister-in-law Sheryl Gerdes; and cousin Don Phillips.
