Eileen Marie Martin

Eileen Marie (Smith) Martin, age 88, of Johnston, IA formerly of Sac City, IA, died June 22, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA. Eileen was born April 11, 1925 in Sac County to Henry and Marie Smith. Eileen received a teacher's certificate from Buena Vista College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Household Equipment from Iowa State College. Eileen taught school for several years before and after marrying Robert James Martin. Robert and Eileen both taught high school for a few years before they started farming.

They and their family lived on a farm for many years south of Newell, IA where they raised seven children, as well as corn, beans, cattle and hogs. Eileen was active in the community and in her church. She was an excellent bridge player, an ardent quilter, a voracious reader, and enthusiastic golfer. Eileen served as the first woman president of the Sac County Farm Bureau and was active in the Catholic Daughters. She was a mom, grandma, sister and friend, and was the go-to person who could accomplish anything: sew fantastic clothes, care for babies, garden, can, freeze corn, help with homework, and play games.

Eileen is survived by her husband of 65 years, Robert Martin; daughter, Peg Martin (Erin Haafke, Erica Metzger and husband Eric and great-grandchild, Calvin); daughter, Pat Martin and husband Brad Mock (Marie Mock, Dan Mock); son, Peter Martin; son, Paul Martin and wife Sara (Jill Martin, Kyle Martin); son, Rusty Martin and wife Kay Meyer (Orion Martin, Claire Meyer, Neil Haglan, Kary Haglan, Jann Haglan and great-granddaughter, Alexis); daughter, Rhonda Martin and husband Kevin Moran (Ethan Moran, Eileen Moran); and son, James Martin (Maxim Martin, Oskar Martin). Her brothers: Father James Smith, William, Edward and wife Joyce; sister, Ann Reisch and husband Don, and sister, Marilyn Hall and husband Stan; along with sisters-in-law: Thelma Musselman, Bonnie Martin, Monica Smith, and Joan Smith, mourn her passing. She is survived by a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Marie Smith; brothers: Cecil, Joe, and Frank; sisters-in-law: Pat Smith, Marvel Smith, and Luella Smith; and brothers-in-law: Dick Martin and Bill Musselman.
