Nathan Nees, age 40 of West Des Moines, IA, passed away on March 26, 2026, at UnityPointy Health - Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, surrounded by his family.
Nathan John Nees was born on January 7, 1986, to Gary and Candace (Nibe) Nees in Storm Lake, IA. He grew up in Storm Lake where he attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated in 2004. During his school years, Nathan was active in sports and formed many close and lasting friendships. He continued his education at Simpson College in Indianola, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2008.
Nathan was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. On October 13, 2012, he was united in marriage to Amanda Esdohr. The couple made their home in Waukee, IA, and were blessed with two daughters, Scarlett and Hazelle. The couple would later divorce.
Nathan worked as an accountant and took pride in his profession. Outside of work, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and cheering on his favorite sports teams—the Chicago Bears, Notre Dame, and the Chicago Blackhawks. He especially loved spending time outdoors and took many memorable fishing trips to Minnesota with his close friend Kevin Brown, something he always looked forward to.
He also had a passion for cooking, particularly smoking and grilling meats, and enjoyed sharing meals with family and friends. Known for his quick wit and great sense of humor, Nathan brought laughter to those around him.
Above all, Nathan cherished his daughters. Saturday nights were reserved for special movie nights filled with popcorn, candy, and time together—moments his girls will forever hold close.
Nathan faced a long and difficult battle with alcoholism, a disease that ultimately claimed his life. While this struggle was a part of his journey, it never defined the love he gave, the laughter he shared, or the impact he had on those around him. His family hopes his story brings greater understanding to alcoholism as a disease and encourages compassion for those who are struggling.
He will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved him.
Nathan is survived by his daughters, Scarlett and Hazelle Nees; parents Gary and Candace Nees of Blairsburg, IA; brother Matthew (Cynthia) Nees of Anchorage, AK; nephew and nieces Finn, Hannah, Amelia and Wren Nees; aunts and uncles: Don (Becky) Nibe of Albia, IA, Dallas (Becky) Nibe of Yuma, AZ, Linda (Steve) Petersen of Carroll, IA, Renae (Randy) Babcock of Odebolt, IA, and Randy (Jane) Nees of Pocahontas, IA; ex-wife Amanda Nees of Waukee, IA; many cousins, other extended family members and friends.
Nathan was preceded in death by his grandparents, Walter and Delores Nees, HJ and Nayda Nibe. and honorary grandparents Cecil and Elma Hatch.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorials will be donated to Storm Lake St. Mary's School and/or the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
