The son of Benjamin and Susannah (Deischer) Grundon, Doyle was born at Keensburg, Illinois on October 2, 1913. He was baptized in Loami, Illinois in 1927, and graduated from New Berlin High School. Doyle enlisted in the United States Army Air Force on June 1, 1943, serving in England at Molesworth with the 303 BG (H) “Hell’s Angels” Combat Team. He was honorably discharged October 19, 1945, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. On August 4, 1957, Doyle was united in marriage to Geraldine Birt in Montebello, California. He was a crane operator for construction engineers, mostly in California. In 1964 a freeway bridge collapsed on him and broke his neck. After surgery and bone grafts he was unable to turn his head, but continued to work until March 1, 1981, when he retired. Doyle and Geraldine moved to Sac City where he attended the First Christian Church and was a member of the V.F.W. Post 590. He was a real handy-man and enjoyed repairing things and helping his neighbors. Everywhere they lived, the neighborhood children always found him. Survivors include his children: Bonnie McCrea and Earline (Harold) Titus both of Sac City and Gary Austin of Dawsonville, GA; his sister Lucille Handegaard of Maryland; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Geraldine, March 3, 2005; six brothers; two sisters; and their spouses. |
