Harriet Thompson

Harriet Maxine Thompson, age 87, of Wall Lake, formerly of Fort Dodge, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2008, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 25th at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lake View, Iowa. The Farber & Otteman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation.

Harriet was born on November 16, 1920, in Estherville, Iowa, the daughter of Emil and Myrtle (Stoddard) Severson. She was baptized on January 1, 1922 in Estherville. Her family moved to Winthrop, Minnesota, where she attended school, graduating in 1938.

On March 22, 1942, Harriet was united in marriage to Mervin Thompson at the Congregational Church in Winthrop. Three children were born to this union: Roger, Betty and Bryan. They made their home in Fort Dodge, Iowa, where Harriet worked as saleswomen at the Boston Store, cashier for the school hot lunch program, and cashier at the Fort Dodge Fruit and Grocery Store. After completing her degree from Bernel College of Cosmetology in Fort Dodge, she opened her own shop, Warden Beauty Shop, in Fort Dodge, which she owned until her retirement.

Harriet was a loving and caring wife and mother, who loved children and had a strong sense of family. She loved having family gatherings, cooking and baking and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed. Harriet also enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Survivors include her children: Roger Thompson and wife Susie of Anoka, Minnesota; Betty Nickless and husband David of Omaha, Nebraska; and Bryan Thompson and wife Eva of Lake View, Iowa; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many extended family members.

Harriet was preceded in death by her parents; husband Mervin on July 21, 2001; and her sisters and brothers: Iris Huffman, Bernice Brennan, Alfred Severson and Lyle Severson.
