Garland Arthur Schmidt, age 90, of Lake View and formerly of Sac City, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Loring Hospital in Sac City.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 14th at the 1st Congregational United Church of Christ in Lake View with Pastor Jess Thomason officiating.
Visitation is from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Sunday at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Lake View.
Garland was born October 21, 1917, in Garfield Township at Lytton, Iowa, the son of Fred A. Schmidt and Neva Pierson Schmidt. He attended Lytton Grade School and later went to Truesdale High School where he graduated in 1934.
On May 24, 1941, Garland was married to Alice Irene Sillars. They are the parents of Diane Stubbs of Des Moines, Iowa and Cynthia (Michael) Puetz of Ankeny, Iowa. They have three granddaughters: Kathleen Richardson of Des Moines, Michele (Chris) Ratigan of Overland Park, Kansas and Emily Stubbs of Des Moines, and four great grandchildren: Colton and Colby Richardson and Jack and Ella Ratigan.
The first ten years of their marriage they lived in Butte, Montana where Garland was manager of Kraft Foods. He spent much time hunting elk and deer and fishing for trout, and had an active part in the rodeo association and the 4H Clubs there.
In 1950 the family moved to Iowa to the Sillars family farm and Garland farmed for many years. He sold cattle for Peterson Sheep and Cattle Company of Spencer, Iowa and did hail crop adjusting for Agri Business Insurance Company. He retired from all at the age of 83.
Garland had a great personality and was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Everyone was his friend. He was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church in Sac City until they left the farm and moved to Lake View in 2003, where he joined the 1st Congregational United Church of Christ Church.
He is survived by his wife Alice, daughters Diane and Cynthia; granddaughters: Kathleen, Emily, and Michele; and great grandchildren Colton, Colby, Jack and Ella; sisters: Maxine Christensen of Scottsdale, AZ and June Harris of Mesa, AZ; brother-in-law James Sillars and wife Anna Belle; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Dale Schmidt; son-in-law Randall Stubbs; and father and mother-in-law, James and Ella Sillars.
