Everett G. Von Ehwegen

Everett G. Von Ehwegen, age 80, of rural Storm Lake, passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2008, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, April 23rd, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa, with Rev. Michael Harman officiating. Burial will be at the Ferguson Cemetery in Lake View under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.

Everett was born on June 19, 1927, in Wall Lake Township, Sac City, Iowa, the son of Friedrich H. and Ella (Overhue) Von Ehwegen. He attended Wall Lake #3 country school, and then Sac City High School, graduating in May 1944. He also met Irene Barnes, his future wife on that night. He was drafted into the United States Army October 1945 and spent 16 months in Alaska as a message center chief, being discharged in June 1947. He worked for his brother Leonard for about two years after his discharge.

On May 1, 1949, Everett was united in marriage to Irene Barnes and they started farming in December 1949 south of Sac City. They lived on this farm for 25 years. In 1974 they moved to Irene’s home place east of Storm Lake and farmed there for 11 more years. He became janitor at Newell-Providence School from 1986-1992 and then caretaker for the Storm Lake Cemetery from 1992 until his retirement.

They enjoyed traveling and visiting their children and grandchildren. Everett’s hobbies included reading, carpentry work, and most of all, ballroom dancing with Irene. They attended many dances in the area throughout the years.

He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and the Newell American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Irene; three children: Kathy Marshall and husband Jon of Lincoln, NE; Randal Von Ehwegen and wife Jill of Vermillion, SD; and Vicky Princ and husband Terry of Lincoln, NE; five grandchildren: Lisha Edelen and husband Anthony of Vermillion; Russell Princ of Ft. Payne, AL; Jennifer Von Ehwegen of Vermillion; and Aden and Seth Marshall of Lincoln; his sister Naomi Judd of Sac City; and many extended family members.

Everett was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: three in infancy and Reinhardt and Leonard Von Ehwegen; five sisters: Caroline Stevens, Luella O’Rourke, Gladys Bogue, Viola Von Ehwegen, and Fern Boettcher.
