Following high school, Darwin joined the United States Merchant Marines and served his country during World War II, until he was honorably discharged.

On January 6, 1946, Darwin was united in marriage to Loraine A. Schnirring in Sac City. The couple was blessed with seven children: Robert, Sherry, Darwin, Jr., Scott, Margo, Doug, and Penny. In later years, they welcomed a foster son, Brandon Ellingson, into their home and family.

Darwin worked hard to make a good life for his family. He was employed in the Sac County Engineer’s Office, was a rural mail carrier for seven years, and operated Kozy Korner Texaco in Sac City. He also worked at Noble Manufacturing in Sac City for 16 years and for Gomaco in Ida Grove, Iowa.

He was an active member of the First Christian Church in Sac City, where he served as a Deacon, Elder and Trustee. He also served on the building committee and was a chairman of the church board. He was a Boy Scout Leader and Little League coach when his children were young.

Darwin and Loraine moved to Storm Lake in 1996 and lived happily in that community until Darwin became a resident in 2002 of the Good Samaritan Center in Newell, where he lived until his death.

A devoted husband and father, Darwin will be remembered for his love of family. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 62 years, Loraine, of Storm Lake: 7 children: Robert (Karen) Carlton of Waukon, Iowa; Sherry (Terry) Evans of Corolla, North Carolina; Darwin David (Judy) Carlton, Jr. of Raymore, Missouri; G. Scott Carlton of Springfield, Missouri; Margo (Larry) Leveranz of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Doug (Judy) Carlton of Newell; and Penny (Jeff) Schrader of Salem, South Dakota; foster son Brandon Ellingson of Cedar Falls, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; extended family and many friends.
