Alfred W. Podewils

Alfred W. Podewils, age 88, of Lake View, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, January 11th, at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake with Rev. Roger Carlisle officiating. Burial will be at the Wall Lake Cemetery with military graveside rites performed by the American Legion Chalon Post No. 262 of Wall Lake. Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 10th, at the funeral home in Wall Lake.

Alfred was born on August 28, 1918, in Carnarvon, Iowa, the son of Herman W. and Rosina M. (Mau) Podewils. He attended country school near Carnarvon. Alfred was inducted into the United States Army on June 8, 1942, at Fort Crook, Nebraska, serving during World War II, earning the rank of PFC 1st Class and awarded five bronze stars, Bronze Star Medal, and Good Conduct Medal on completion of his duty on October 22, 1945, at Jefferson Barracks in Missouri.

After serving his country, Alfred returned home and started farming. On April 15, 1948, he was united in marriage to Viola J. Mohr in Ulmer, Iowa. This union was blessed with two children: Larry and Phyllis. Farming was Alfred’s life. He loved tilling the soil in the spring, planting seeds, and harvesting the crops in the fall. He also raised chickens and became known as the “Egg Man” having an egg and poultry business for many years. He retired from farming in 1995, at the time of Viola’s death. In June of 2005, Alfred moved to Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake due to failing health.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake and 61 year member of the Wall Lake American Legion.

Alfred was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He loved his family and treasured their visits. Survivors include his son Larry Podewils and his wife Jane Ann of Carnarvon; daughter Phyllis Podewils of Lake View; four grandchildren: Belinda Richards and husband Nate, Nancy Podewils and friend John Fineran, Kenneth Podewils, and Crystal Podewils and friend Marc Pietig; four great-grandchildren: Jade Fineran, Isaiah Podewils, Ashley Fineran, and Serenity Richards; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; wife Viola on January 25, 1995; and two sisters, Caroline Levine and Leona Podewils.
