Luella was born on November 3, 1918, near Jolley, Iowa,
in Calhoun County, the daughter of Harm and Katherine (Johnson) Stein. She was
baptized at St. John Lutheran Church north of Lytton in 1918, and confirmed at
Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church in 1933 where she remained a lifetime member. Her
parents farmed near Jolley and she attended Jolley schools graduating in 1937.
On May 12, 1940, wedding bells were ringing, for Luella
and Clarence Carl Rix were united in marriage at Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church
in Lytton. This union was blessed with five children: a daughter, who died
in infancy, and daughters, Dorothy, Betty, and Mary, and son, Dean. Luella
was a devoted wife and helpmate on their farm north of Lytton. She enjoyed
being a housewife and mother, tending her garden, canning, cooking for her family,
helping with the chicken chores, and any other things she could do to help Clarence
with the farm work. In later years she especially enjoyed being with her
children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They will all cherish
their memories of her.
Survivors include her daughters: Dorothy Wilson and
her husband Don of Sac City; Betty Kral and her husband Steve of Jolley, IA;
Mary Clearwater and her husband Jack of Rockwell City, IA; her son Dean Rix and
his wife Deb of Fonda; 12 grandchildren: JoAnn Wilson, Julie Wilson, Doug (Christy)
Kral, Tim (Gloria) Kral, Jean (Denny) Henningsen, James (Ann) Clearwater, Tracy
(Randy) Fox, Cindy Harvey, Shawn Rix, Heather (Tim) Johnson, Tina Rix, and Tonya
(Josh) Petersen; 8 great-grandchildren: LeAnn, Gary, Kyle, Josephine, Julian,
Adan, Blayke, and Erika. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Nelma
Rix of Fonda, and Helen Myer of Binford, ND, and many extended family members.
Luella was preceded in death by her parents; husband,
Clarence Rix on September 20, 1999; infant daughter; sister, Annie Helmbrecht,
and brother, John Stein.
