Florence Pearl Nuehring, age 94, of Lytton, Iowa, passed away on Friday, January 27, 2006, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.

Florence Pearl (Hollrah) Nuehring, daughter of Johann Heinrich and Annie B. (Lewis) Hollrah, was born January 19, 1912, in St. Charles, Missouri. She lived there with her parents until 1918 when they moved to University City, Missouri. She attended school in University City and graduated from the University City High School June 12, 1930.

During the Depression she and her parents moved to rural Sac City, Iowa, in November of 1932.

Florence was baptized January 28, 1926, at the Clayton Methodist Church, in Clayton, Missouri. She was confirmed December 11, 1949, at the Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church, Lytton, Iowa, where she remained a member. She was a member of the Dorcas Circle for many years.

On April 1, 1938, Florence began her employment in the Dry Goods Department of Feddersen’s General Store and continued this work until June 1943. She also served as a dry goods clerk for Elmer Sandahl in the same store from June 1943 to 1946. In March of 1946 the store was sold to John Butler and Calvin Wolf and she worked for them until November of 1946.

Florence met her future husband, Frank Nuehring, when they both worked in Feddersen’s General Store. She and Frank were married November 2, 1942, in Bethany, Missouri. To this union were born four children: stillborn twin daughters, Caryl and Maryl; a daughter, Janice; and son, Roger.

Jack Poort printed the Lytton Town Crier and Florence worked for him from the fall of 1947 to the spring of 1948.

After her husband, Frank passed away, she worked in the Lytton Community School lunch room from January 1959 to May 1959. In May 1959 she began working at the Lytton Co-operative Creamery wrapping butter and later working in the test room.

On January 1, 1967, she began working in the Dietary Department at Park View Manor. After completing a 90-hour correspondence course from Iowa State University, she earned her qualification as Dietary Supervisor and continued working in this capacity until her retirement in June of 1985.

Florence enjoyed sewing, embroidery, knitting, quilting, gardening, and taking care of flowers, especially roses, her favorite flower. She also was an animal lover, particularly of dogs, cats, blue jays, orioles, wrens, and goldfinches. The St. Louis Cardinals baseball team held a special place in her heart, as did horse racing each spring at Kentucky Derby time. She baked many birthday cakes for relatives, family, and friends, and was especially known for her angel food cakes, brownies, and cream puffs.

Florence is survived by her daughter, Jan; son, Roger and his wife Rae Jean; her granddaughter, Kristina Brewster and husband Paul; grandson, Daniel; and her nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Annie B. Hollrah; identical twin daughters, Caryl and Maryl; husband Frank Nuehring; sister Eva (Mrs. Milton) Schnirring; brother Lewis Hollrah; and nephew Floyd Schnirring.
