Carl Smidt

Carl Fred Smidt, 85, of Lake View, IA, formerly of Sac City, died Monday, June 26, 2006, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 30th, 2:00 p.m., at the First Christian Church in Sac City, with Rev. Sharla Hulsey officiating. Burial will be at the Cory Grove Cemetery in Sac City under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, June 29th, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Lake View.

Carl was born on September 19, 1920, in Adams County, NE, to Fred and Minnie (Krenzien) Smidt. He attended country school in Nebraska.

In 1932 the family moved to their mother’s farm near Ulmer, IA. He was inducted into the Army in September of 1942 where he served in the Pacific Arena until November 1945. After his discharge he began farming and in 1951 married Mildred Carlton in Storm Lake. They had a daughter, Jolene and lived on a farm near Breda for 20 years. In 1971, they semi-retired and moved into Sac City where Carl worked at Nobles Royal Industry until they closed.

Carl and Mildred moved to Black Hawk Life Care Center in April of 2001, where they resided until Mildred’s death in 2002, Carl continued to live there until his death on June 26th.

Survivors include his daughter, Jolene Hall and her husband Steve of Manson, IA; granddaughter, Melissa Monahan and her husband Richard of Lohrville, IA; Steve’s family, Jenny and Jason Durschmidt of Fort Dodge, IA; Jody and Jeff Kirchoff of Manson, Michelle Hall of Fort Dodge, and Brandon and Richard Hall of Manson. Other survivors include Carl’s great-grandchildren: Mikayla, Mackenzie, Madison, Mollie, Megan, and Brett Monahan all of Lohrville and Devin Kirchoff of Manson; his brothers and sisters: Clara Freese of Tulsa, OK, Irvin and Wilma Smidt of Lake View, Lavon Karstens of Lake View, and Harvey and Annabel Smidt of Lake View; brothers-in-law, LaVern Buse of Lake View and Darwin and Lorraine Carlton of Storm Lake, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred; sisters: Velma Ulven, Della Buse, and Matilda Beckman.
