Cora Pontious
Cora Alida Pontious, age 93, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2006, at Park View Care Center in Sac City. Cora (Thorson) Pontious was born November 10, 1912, in Rothsay, Minnesota, to parents, George and Carrie Thorson. Her parents were farmers. The family moved to South Dakota in 1918; several years later they moved to Iowa. Cora’s elementary education was in rural schools. In her teens she was active in 4H Club work, especially in the sewing classes and that continued, as she grew older as well. Cora graduated from Eagle Grove (Iowa) High School. She worked in Minneapolis a few years, then returned to Iowa where she did secretarial work for a company in Humboldt. It was there that she met Henry Pontious. They were married February 14, 1940. During World War II they moved to California. They both worked in a war plant. They returned to Iowa after the war and lived at Twin Lakes, where they were owners of Twin Lakes Grocery & Boat Livery. Some years later they moved to Florida. Cora returned to Des Moines after Henry’s death in 1970. She was employed in Milton’s shop, Thorson Manufacturing Company, until she retired in 1983. While living in Des Moines, Cora was active in the Baptist Church. She and other churchwomen worked for the Red Cross and Senior Care Centers. Cora’s specialty was making lap robes for residents living there. Due to health reasons, Cora moved to Sac City in March 1997 to be near her family. She was a member of the Baptist Church in Sac City. Cora is survived by her stepson, Frank Pontious and his wife Phyllis, who were special caregivers for her. Six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 8 great great-grandchildren also survive her. Her only surviving brother is Milton Thorson of Florida. Cora was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry; five brothers: Joe, Clarence, Alvin, Ernest, and Kenneth Thorson; four sisters: Alma Thompson, Lillian Keller, Olive Berg, and Blanche Berg; and stepson, Robert Pontious. |
