Robert Mason
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 1st, 4:00-8:00 pm at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City. Robert W. Mason, age 85, of Lytton, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at the Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City, Iowa. Robert was born November 27, 1919, in Carnarvon, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Florence (Gray) Mason. He grew up and attended grammar school in Carnarvon and graduated from Wall Lake High School in 1937. He was baptized and confirmed at the Lytton Presbyterian Church and became an active member, serving on the Board of Trustees. Bob was united in marriage to Wanda Haffner on November 5, 1939, at the Presbyterian Church in Lytton. To this blessed union, two children were born: Sharlene and Cynthia. Bob served in the U.S. Navy during WWII entering on April 25, 1944, and being discharged on January 18, 1946. Bob served on the U.S.S. Pondera (APA 191) and received the rank of Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class. He was an active member in the Hutchinson-Liechty American Legion Post No. 546 until his death. Bob worked as a yardman for the Dixon Lumber Company in Lytton prior to his service and upon his return became the bookkeeper, retiring in 1981 after 26 years. Bob enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews, all whom he valued so much. He also enjoyed fishing and playing cards. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Wanda; children: Sharlene and David Platt of Green Valley, AZ, and Cynthia and Phil Rankin of Upland, CA; four grandchildren: Jon and Marie Platt of Coon Rapids, MN, Libby Thompson of Burnsville, MN, Chad Rankin of Upland, CA, and Brandon Rankin of La Verne, CA; five great grandchildren; two brothers: Jerry and Velma of Marshalltown, IA, and Arthur, Jr. and Marvel of Fort Dodge, IA; sister, Helen Thorp of Wall Lake, IA; and extended family members and many friends. The family would like to offer special thanks to the medical staff and to the Shady Oaks staff for the kindness during the last days of Bob’s life. His family wishes to express that he may never thought he was a hero but that’s what he was to us!!! |
