Marvin Freese

Funeral services will be held for Marvin Freese on Friday, March 25th, 10:30 a.m., at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lake View with Reverend Jerry Schultz officiating and J. Andy Meredith, organist. Honorary pallbearers include the following: Josh Churchman, David Freese, and Johnnie Peters. Active pallbearers include: Mario Freese, Bob Churchman, Raymond Freese, Ralph Freese, Gary Freese, Bob Nansteel, Bobby Nansteel, Jr., Harvey Freese, Jr., Monte Peters, and Dan Wollesen. Burial will be at the Wall Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home with military graveside rites by the Lake View American Legion Eilert-Auen Post No. 133.

Visitation will be on Thursday, March 24th, 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Lake View.

Marvin John Freese, 81, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2005, at his home in Lake View, Iowa.

Marvin was born on January 1, 1924, the son of John and Katie (Peters) Freese in Jackson Township, rural Breda, Iowa. He was baptized April 27, 1924, at Wheatland Presbyterian Church of Breda. He lived in Sioux Falls, SD, Inwood, IA, and Lake View, IA, while he was growing up. He attended Whitter School in Sioux Falls, SD, and Inwood Schools. Marvin was inducted into active service in the U.S. Navy on December 26, 1942, serving his country during WWII in the Navy Sea Bees, earning the rank of Ship’s Cook (B) First Class, USNR. He was awarded the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre, and Asiatic Pacific (3 stars). He was honorably discharged on January 14, 1946.

Marvin was united in marriage to Marjorie Phyllis Monen on October 4, 1947, in Carroll, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Vicki Jo, Terry Lee, and Thomas J. Marjorie passed away in 1989.

On May 24, 1996, Marvin and Marjorie Elizabeth Spike were married at the Methodist Church in What Cheer, Iowa.

As a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lake View, Marvin served as an elder. He was a Special Commander and Founder of the Lake View V. F. W. Post No. 6537, and member of the American Legion, Eilert-Auen Post No. 133 in Lake View, Iowa.

Marvin loved carpentry and was the Superintendent of A.S. Horner Construction Company in Colorado and New Mexico, until his retirement in 1987, when they moved back to Lake View from Albuquerque. When he wasn’t fishing, golfing, using his computer, or playing the slots, he liked to remodel his children’s homes, his own home, and other friends and families homes. He always had a love for animals and truly loved his pet dog, Kim Lee, (a Shiba Inu), and his special friend, Calie the cat.

Survivors include his wife Marjorie Elizabeth; his sons, Terry Lee Freese and his wife Gwen of Brighton, CO, and Thomas J. Freese and his wife Debbie of Chesapeake, VA; daughter Vicki Jo Churchman and husband Bob of Thornton, CO; two brothers: Harvey Freese of Vacaville, CA, and Kenneth Freese of Lake View; two sisters: Ruth Daggett and Gertrude Nansteel both of Lake View; his grandchildren: Barbara (Churchman) Millsapps, Lisa Ann (Churchman) Mitchell, Joshua Churchman, Mario Freese, David Freese, Nicole Kruse Freese, Brian Yantorno, Erika Freese, and Victoria (Freese) Romero; great-grandchildren: Marcus Mitchel, Alana Mitchell, Katie Ellen Millsapps, Marianna (Freese) Romero, Dante Yantorno and Isabella Yantorno; extended family members, and many friends.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Marjorie Phyllis who passed away in 1989.
