Alvin G. Schmitt

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Monday, February 21st, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City, with Father Larry McCarty officiating. Charles Schulte will accompany Steve Goecke in musical selections. Pallbearers include the following: Jeff Seals, Lawrence Schmitt, Brian Schmitt, Lenard Schmitt, George Schmitt, and Mike Schmitt. Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery in Sac City under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 2:00-5:00 pm, Sunday, February 20th at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.

A vigil service was held on Friday, February 18th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, Iowa, with Father Ernie Braida officiating and the Wallace Family Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Alvin G. Schmitt, the son of George and Eva (Feltes) Schmitt, was born on September 5, 1925, in Boyer Valley Township of Sac County, Iowa.

Alvin was united in marriage with his first wife, Vernabelle D. Meyer on August 10, 1948, in Early, Iowa. They were married for 34 years until her death on September 3, 1982. Alvin was united in marriage with Lula P. Osborn on September 14, 1985. He lived in Early for 27 years, Lytton, Iowa for 50 years prior to moving to Newton, Iowa, in 2003. Alvin was a farmer and brick mason, retiring in 1988. Although he was retired he still liked to know what was being done on the farms. He enjoyed trains, reading, and brickwork and loved to be with grandchildren. Alvin was a loving and devoted husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend.

Alvin died on Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. He was 79. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Vernabelle; three brothers, John, Joseph, and Leo Schmitt; and three sisters: Hilda Hatting, Marie Ziegmann, and Louise Baker in January of 2005.

Those left to honor Alvin’s memory are his wife, Lula; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Susan Schmitt of Pocahontas, IA; his two step daughters and their spouses: Louise and Ora Seals of Newton and Jane and Charles Wertz of Eureka, IL; three step sons: Roy and Fran Cupples of Fullerton, NE, Tom Cupples and friend, Bertha Crook of Knoxville, IA, and Herman and Connie Cupples of Newton; two grandsons, 13 step grandchildren; ten step great-grandchildren; one step great-great grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
