Richard Hammond

Richard “Dick” Charles Hammond, age 64, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Dick was born October 25, 1939, in Woodbury County, Iowa, the son of William and Kathryn (McDermott) Hammond. He was baptized April 10, 1955 at Correctionville. He received his education in Woodbury County School.

He married Marcia “Marty” Sargent on October 13, 1958, at Sioux City, Iowa. This union was blessed with three children: Richard, Denise, and Tracy.

Dick worked for Hallet Materials as a heavy equipment operator for 26 years, to which he was awarded many safety awards. After retiring he worked for Bedrock Sand & Gravel until his untimely death.

Dick enjoyed attending auctions, old tractors, horses, hill climbing, and spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He truly enjoyed life to the fullest. Dick was known as Dad or Grandpa to more than his own. He had a sense of humor, a loving heart, always enjoyed a good joke, and had a contagious smile, that anyone who met him will always remember.

He is survived by his best friend and wife of 46 years, Marty of Sac City; two sons: Richard A. Hammond of Quimby, IA, and Tracy Hammond and June Pfeleeger of Cherokee, IA; a daughter Denise Freeman of Sac City; six grandchildren: Makala (Andy) Diercks and Trever Freeman all of Indianola, IA, Sara Peterson, Alex and Arika Hammond, and Christopher Joines all of Cherokee, IA; two great-grandchildren: R. Alex and Mekena Diercks of Indianola. He is also survived by his mother, Kathryn Chinn of Wall Lake, IA; two brothers: Norman and wife Patsy of Wall Lake, IA, and Thomas and wife Sherrie of Sac City; two sisters: Shirley Hoaglund of Lake View, IA, and Bernice Roth and husband Don of Odebolt; extended family members and many friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his father, William; two sisters: Geneva Foster and Janice Karsten; two half brothers: Delmar and Duane Hammond; and half sister, Vivian Stratton.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, Augsut 27th, at Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake with their family pastor, Keith Byers of Correctionville, Iowa, and special taped music selections: “Angels Among Us” & “I’m Already There”. Honorary pallbearers will include the following: Tommy Hammond, Kassi Jo Sargent, Tony Hammond, Lacey LaScala, and Stephanie McCormick. Casket bearers will be: Ed Garvin, Waide Sargent, Chad Mohr, Tim McCormick, Beaux Sargent, and Scotty Hoaglund. Burial will be at the Wall Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5:00 – 8:00 pm, Thursday, August 26th, at the funeral home with a 7:15 prayer service.
