Lorene Rix

Lorene Marie Rix, age 83, of Sac City, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Loring Hospital in Sac City following a lengthy illness.

Lorene Marie (Merten) Rix was born on May 31, 1920, south of Early, the daughter of Herman and Marie Mary (Skork) Merten. She was baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early and attended Early Community School.

On January 8, 1945, Lorene and Herbert Rix were united in marriage at Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church in Lytton. They were blessed with two children: Thomas and Susan. Lorene was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She would do anything for her granddaughters. She helped Herbert with the farm work, enjoyed mowing the grass, and kept busy with her garden and canning. Later she worked in the Deli for Jerry’s Super Value in Sac City. Lorene was known for her great mints she made for weddings, and her cooking and baking. She liked to do cross-stitch on various items for the home and for gifts. They moved to Sac City in 1981.

Lorene was a member of Emanuel-St. John Lutheran Church of Lytton and a member of the Neighborhood Club.

Survivors include her husband Herbert of Sac City; her son Thomas and his wife Carol Rix of Spring Grove, IL; her daughter Susan Rix and granddaughter Katie Marie Rix of Carroll, IA; her sister Margaret Yender of Early, IA; and extended family and friends.

Lorene was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: Herman, Jr., Herbert, and Edwin Merten; five sisters: Anna Buehler, Elma Woehl, Katherine Teubert, Dorothy Knight, and Elsie Merten; and a granddaughter Samantha Rix.

The funeral service for Lorene will be held Thursday, March 4, 2004, 10:30 a.m., at Emanuel-St. John Lurtheran Church in Lytton, Iowa, with Pastor Wayne Pfannkuch officiating. Lorene Hinrichs will accompany Bruce Perry, soloist, and congregational singing. The flower committee consists of Joan Wilkerson, Patty Youll, and Jack and Ardy McDermott. Honorary pallbearers include: Teresa Van Hulzen, Jane Alesch, Bill Merten, Royce Mertens, Jeff Rix, Mike Rix, and Jerry Youll. Casketbearers will be the following: Davin Merten, Cecil Barlow, David Mertens, Rob Yender, Dick Merten, and Bill Woehl. Interment will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Sac City under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home. Friends who wish to send condolences may do so online.
