Lillian M. Bedel

Lillian M. Bedel, age 86, of Wall Lake, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2004, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake.

Lillian Emma Marie Schultz was born on April 26, 1918, the daughter of Charles and Louise (Vosgerau) Schultz. She lived on a farm south and east of Odebolt. At the age of 13 she moved with her parents and two sisters, Edna and Vera, to Wall Lake. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Wall Lake and a member of the Guild. Lillian attended country school through the eighth grade.

On November 10, 1942, Lillian was united in marriage to Aloysius “Al” Bedel at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Vail, Iowa. After their marriage, Al and Lillian farmed on the original Bedel farm south and east of Wall Lake. In 1962, due to a heart condition, Al had to give up farming. They, with their children, moved into Wall Lake. They owned and operated a sundry store which they bought from Mr. & Mrs. M. G. Mackey, which was known as Bedel Sundries. Al and Lillian operated the business for 15 years, when in 1977, they decided to retire. They sold the business to Mr. & Mrs. Ed Reiter.

Lillian was a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, antique furniture, and working on the genealogy of their family history.

Survivors include her children: Ed (Joan) Bedel of Omaha, NE, Richard (Theresa) Bedel of Wall Lake, IA; and Sandra (Bud) Wilwerding of Omaha; eleven grandchildren: Mitchel, Kevin, Phillip, Jeff, and Mike (Kristyl) Bedel, Don (Angie) Wilwerding, Diane (Jerry) Plagge, Julie (Justin) Zetterman, Debbie (Andrew) Johansen, Lori (Vince) Montano, and Lisa (Darcy) Nelson; eleven great-grandchildren: Michael, Jonathan, Joshua, Tyler, Emily, Allison, Turner, Nathaniel, Elijah, Chase, and Kylee. Other survivors include her sister Vera Bedel of Omaha, NE, sister-in-law Rosella Schultz of Denison, IA, and extended family members.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; husband Al, January 6, 1994; three children in infancy: John, Beverly, and Rita (twin sister of Richard); three brothers: Albert, Walter, and Raymond Schultz; and three sisters: Ada Stehr, Freda Stehr, and Edna Rowan.

Funeral services for Lillian will be held Wednesday, August 4th, 10:30 am, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake, with Father John McGuirk officiating. Sue Mein will accompany Julie Steinkamp and the St. Joseph’s Choir with special music. Mr. & Mrs. David Yohnke will be in charge of the flower arrangements. Honorary pallbearers include Lillian’s granddaughters: Diane Plagge, Julie Zetterman, Debbie Johansen, Lori Montano, Lisa Nelson, Kristyl Bedel, and Angie Wilwerding. Pallbearers are the following: Mitchel Bedel, Kevin Bedel, Phillip Bedel, Don Wilwerding, Mike Bedel, Jeff Bedel, Vince Montano, Jerry Plagge, Justin Zetterman, Andrew Johansen, and Darcy Nelson. Burial will be at the Wall Lake Cemetery with the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2-8:00 pm with a vigil service at 7:30 pm.
