Virgil D. Hutchinson

Virgil D. Hutchinson, age 74, of Newell, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at Buena Vista Regional Hospital in Storm Lake.

Virgil was born October 7, 1929, in Sac City, the son of Joe and Eva M. (Cheney) Hutchinson. He attended Sac City Schools. On November 16, 1946, Virgil was united in marriage to Charolette F. Nation in Cherokee, Iowa. They were blessed with four children: Martha, James, Merlin, and Mary. They lived in Sac City until they built a new home north of Newell. Virgil was a member of the First Christian Church in Sac City.

Virgil was a superintendent for McCorkle Construction in Sac City and Gethmann Construction in Marshalltown, Iowa, retiring in 1992. He was known for his great story telling, and working with quarter horses, but his fondest memories were of driving stock cars when he was younger, qualifying for the Daytona 500 in 1954.

Survivors include his wife Charolette; his children Martha Baker of Belton, TX, Merlin Hutchinson and his wife Melody of Storm Lake, IA, and Mary Phifer and K.T Coleman of Fonda, IA; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his sisters: Ada Mae Bauer of Spirit Lake, Norma Ripley and her husband Arnold, Sr. of Sac City, Maurine Stanford of Poulsbo, WA, Donnita Hicks and her husband Everett of Sac City, Betty Hanke and her husband Neal of Topeka, KS; and a brother Robert Hutchinson of Sac City; extended family and many friends.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; son James; six brothers Eugene (Dutch), Paul, Billie Joe, Keith, Everett, and Dickie Joe; and sister Charlotte Moore.

Service for Virgil will be Saturday, November 15, 2003, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Christian Church in Sac City with Reverend Sharla Hulsey officiating. Phyllis Pontious will play the organ and Frand Pontious, soloist. Pallbearers will include: Arnold Ripley, Jr., Kenneth Thomas, Brad Boque, Dean Karnopp, Harlan Grau, and Tom Harmon. Honorary pallbearers include: Jim Mason, Kenneth McBride, Curt Stern, Jim Von Ahn, Don Weisenborn, Gene Von Ahn, Harlan Grau, and Tom Harmon. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Sac City.

Visitation is Friday, November 14, 2003, at Farber & Otteman Funeral Home, Sac Ctiy, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.
