| Donald Leroy Wilkens, age 70, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, February 15, 2009, at his home in Sac City.
Don was born on August 23, 1938, at Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Neoma (Bohnenkamp) Wilkens. He grew up around Marshalltown and Carroll, Iowa, attending elementary school at Marshalltown and finishing high school at Carroll. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Marines, serving from 1956-1958, earning the rank of Corporal when he was honorably discharged. On January 10, 1959, Don was united in marriage to LaVon “Bonnie” Lampe at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Carroll, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children: Nancy, Brenda, Kevin and Norma.
|They made their home in Sac City where Don was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was manager of Seymour Foods and retired from A.M.P.C. in Lytton in 2000. Don enjoyed collecting Budweiser Steins, gardening, doing yard work and helping the elderly. He loved to travel and spend time with his grandchildren and family. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother who cherished his family and friends.
| Survivors include his wife Bonnie Wilkens of Sac City; mother Neoma Wilkens of Toledo, IA; children: Nancy (Brian) Alcorn of Fort Dodge, Brenda (Dennis) Sharkey of Fort Pierre, SD, Kevin (Sara) Wilkens of Hesperia, CA, and Norma (Jim Reiman) Weitzel of Sac City; grandchildren: Brett Alcorn, Cedar Rapids, Brad Alcorn, Cedar Rapids, Becky Alcorn, Fort Dodge, Chad, Donald, and Adam Sharkey, Tombstone, AZ, Michael Sharkey, Fort Pierre, SD, Heather and Christine Wilkens, Hesperia, CA, Jacob Wilkens, Hill Air Force Base, UT, Melissa Weitzel, South Sioux City, NE, Jamie Weitzel, Sac City, and Kara Wilkens, Sac City; great-grandchildren: Emma and Austin Alcorn, Cedar Rapids, Connor Alcorn, Cedar Rapids, Gavin Bacon, Fort Dodge, Lauren Sharkey, Tombstone, AZ, Madison Wilkens, Hesperia, CA, and Mickael McChesney, S. Sioux City, Ne. Other survivors include his brothers: Jim Wilkens of San Diego, CA, Michael (Mary Ann) Wilkens of Hephzibah, GA, and Daniel (Debra) Wilkens of Montour, IA; sister-in-law Carolyn Wilkens of Oakdale, CT; mother-in-law Bertha Lampe of Sac City; and many extended family members and friends.
|Don was preceded in death by his father Leonard Wilkens; brother David Wilkens; and father-in-law Clarence Lampe.
